History

Young Learners School was established in December 2000 as a unique collaborative model between the Houston Independent School District, Gulf Coast Community Service Association, and Neighborhood Centers, Inc. Young Learners School officially opened its doors in 2001. Currently, Young Learners School collaborative partners include the Houston Independent School District, Southwest Schools District, Gulf Coast Community Service Association, AVANCE , Harris County Department of Education, and licensed early childhood centers. Since 2001, the program has grown to serve more than 2,500 eligible three, four, and five-year-old children in forty-two existing Head Start and licensed early childhood centers. Collaborative partnerships such as Young Learners School allow programs to reach beyond their own boundaries to provide the strength and breadth of public school instruction along with enhanced services to the children they serve.
